October 27, 2017

In response to hateful graffiti at the University of Windsor in the summer of 2017, WUFA's Status of Women, Diversity and Equity Action Committee (SWDEAC) coordinated a panel discussion and interactive art session that was held on October 26, 2017 in McPherson Lounge (Alumni Hall) from 4-6pm. This creative panel was the first step in further developing the campus community's capacity to proactively address hate speech and violence.

The speakers at the event included Beverly Jacobs (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law), Emily Rosser (Coordinator of the Bystander Initiative) and Admira Konjic (VP Student Advocacy, UWSA).

The event was well attended with nearly 50 people participating in the discussions and the follow-up art session, where participants were guided to create a "graffitti back" to be displayed around campus.

This was the first in a series of events that will explore community-based responses to hate. Future events will include a mindfulness workshop for developing skills of individual and collective care, and a workshop exploring concrete ways to be a supportive ally in everyday life.

A special thank you to the following sponsors for supporting the event: Windsor University Faculty Association, Office of Human Rights, Equity & Accessibility, Office of the Provost, and Faculty of Law’s Transnational Law & Justice Network.
